Men in the United States for the first time will be able to buy the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra over the counter for the first time in six years, the Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday.
The move will be in theFederal Register of as early as October 10and will be accompanied by a public notice outlining the safety and efficacy of the drug, which will be available only through the FDA's National Center for Health Education and Research.
The FDA has received multiple complaints from patients and doctors about the lack of proper testing to identify potential side effects of the drug and recommend alternative treatments.
The FDA has also issued warnings about a number of other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, including, which is currently not approved for sale in the U. S.
"This announcement is a major step in the fight against counterfeit and unlicensed products," said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a release.
The FDA said it was concerned by the number of complaints in the past year about the lack of drug testing in the country and that patients should still take the drug.
"This announcement was a major step in the fight against counterfeit and unlicensed products," Mermin said in the release.
The FDA has also received multiple complaints about the way Viagra and other ED drugs work.
"The FDA has issued several warnings regarding the safety and efficacy of Viagra, and has issued several warnings to doctors, pharmacists and patients regarding the safety and efficacy of other drugs, such as sildenafil citrate, tadalafil and vardenafil," the FDA said in the release.
The agency said Viagra and sildenafil citrate are approved for the treatment of ED but have not been approved for sale in the U. and are not recommended for use by patients in Europe or elsewhere.
Viagra and sildenafil citrate are marketed under the brand names Revatio and Revatio-C.
In September, the FDA posted a warning about possible health risks associated with the use of Viagra, including potential heart-related deaths and a rare, potentially life-threatening bleeding that may occur during sexual activity.
The warning stated that patients taking Viagra or sildenafil have been advised against sexual activity, and have not shown any signs of heart disease or blood pressure issues.
The FDA said it was concerned the warnings were only applied in cases where other ED drugs were not effective.
"The FDA has received multiple complaints about the use of sildenafil citrate, tadalafil and vardenafil," the FDA said in the release.
The FDA said it has received several reports of serious side effects including flushing, headaches, dizziness, nasal congestion and indigestion.
The agency is advising patients to seek medical advice from their healthcare provider if they experience any of the following symptoms after taking Viagra or sildenafil.
The FDA said it did not provide additional information on the safety of Viagra or sildenafil for patients who are taking other ED drugs. The agency is advising patients to consult their healthcare provider for advice on the use of Viagra or sildenafil to prevent adverse effects.
The FDA said it was concerned that some of the reported side effects were not severe enough to warrant the use of other ED drugs, including Viagra.
